Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when the couple move from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
