Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
