The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
