RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
