Bolsonaro detained after being declared a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
